WHY TECHNIQUE?

Piano technique is the foundation of expressive and effortless performance.

It enables pianists to play with ease, focusing on the emotional and artistic elements of their music. Good technique leads to smoother, more controlled movements, essential for tackling complex pieces and achieving musicality.

But it doesn’t need to be boring!

Many students see technique as dull and repetitive — a collection of drills that feel disconnected from real music. When practice feels like a chore, motivation drops, exercises get rushed, and progress slows.

Music Mischief flips that idea on its head. Technique becomes playful, imaginative, and memorable — where students practice staccato on frying pans and explore legato with monkeys! By turning technical work into stories and movement, children stay engaged, practise more consistently, and develop into confident, well-rounded musicians.

At the heart of Music Mischief is Melody, a friendly character who guides children through their musical journey.

Learning happens through interactive, board-game–style activities that encourage students to physically use the book while practising. Bright illustrations and strong visual cues support music theory in a way that’s fun, memorable, and child-friendly — turning technique exercises like legato, staccato, and finger coordination into playful, imaginative experiences.

“I noticed my students losing interest, despite the resources available.”

While exploring different methods and materials for teaching technique, I found that there was room for more creativity and imagination. Since technique is vital, I wanted to make sure students build strong foundations from the beginning. My goal was to make technique both effective and fun, using imagination, play, and creativity to turn practice into an enjoyable experience.
